The Brief

  • Free detectors are available at city-organized events for small property owners.
  • Law requires alarms in every unit with gas piping by January 1, 2027.
  • Detectors must meet UL safety standards and be installed near gas appliances.

Local Law 102, passed by the City Council in 2025, mandates that residential buildings with gas piping install natural gas alarms in every dwelling unit by January 1, 2027.

National Grid is distributing free natural gas detectors to small residential property owners through events co-hosted with the city’s Department of Buildings.

The detectors are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are intended for small property owners only. At each event, staff demonstrate how the devices function and explain the law’s requirements.

The law applies to apartment buildings, one- and two-family homes, hotels, motels, and single room occupancy buildings. Alarms must be placed near gas appliances in each unit.

Owners may choose hard-wired, plug-in, or battery-powered models, provided they meet UL 1484 or UL 2075 safety standards. The city has listed several battery-powered models that comply with the law.

National Grid advises residents to act quickly if they smell gas or if an alarm sounds. They should evacuate to a safe location and call 911 or National Grid’s gas emergency line at 718-643-4050.
