Microsoft Defends GTA 6 Preorder Numbers Amid Claims of PS5 Skew

Microsoft has responded to a report suggesting that preorders for GTA 6 are 'heavily skewed' toward PlayStation 5. The company’s Chief Software Officer, Matthew Ball, stated that Microsoft is 'very happy' with the preorder numbers, asserting that internal data shows the preorders align with the company’s share of the console market.

The Verge’s Tom Warren previously reported that the PS5’s dominance in GTA 6 preorders was raising concerns about Xbox’s market position. However, Ball emphasized that the game is 'breaking records for Xbox' and that the company expects further record-breaking performance in the fall.

Sony’s collaboration with Rockstar Games has significantly influenced GTA 6’s marketing and development. The PS5 version of the game is highlighted in promotional materials, and the console is featured in gameplay footage and a custom UI. Sony has also shared details about PS5-specific features, such as the DualSense controller’s speaker and haptic feedback, which are integrated into the game.

The PlayStation app logo on smartphones has been modified to include GTA 6 colors and tree fronds, further reinforcing the partnership. Analysts suggest that the PS5 has sold over 95 million units as of June 30, while Microsoft has not released recent sales figures for its Xbox Series X and S consoles.

The Verge’s report also mentioned that Microsoft’s 'reset' under new CEO Asha Sharma may involve restructuring Xbox as a separate entity. However, this was not addressed in Ball’s statement. GTA 6 is set to launch on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.
