The Brief

  • Lap times in Mexico this season are closer to 2025 regulations than in prior years.
  • Charles Leclerc's fastest time in FP2 was faster than his 2025 FP1 time.
  • Track resurfacing and supporting series helped condition the circuit.

Lap times in Mexico this season have been closer to 2025 regulations than in previous years, according to race data. This is evident in the performance of Formula 1 cars during Friday's sessions.

Charles Leclerc's fastest time in FP2 was faster than his 2025 FP1 time, showing a notable improvement. In FP2, his time of 1m17.827s was just a fraction off Max Verstappen's 2025 time of 1m17.392s.

Track resurfacing between Turn 10 and Turn 1, along with the presence of supporting series like the Masters Historic series, GTM Super Copa, and Formula 4 NACAM Championship, helped condition the circuit for F1 events.

Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra noted that the track was in better condition compared to last year, and that the supporting series contributed to the track's evolution throughout the day. He also mentioned that altitude and engine performance played a role in the cars' performance.

The new cars' performance envelope has created challenges, particularly at Turn 12, where higher speeds have made braking points more difficult due to the effect of 'dirty air' from cars ahead.

Alex Albon highlighted the increased straightline speeds, saying that corners like Turn 4 and Turn 12 require earlier braking due to the speed carried down the straights. He also expressed confidence that the cars could break speed records this weekend.
