The Brief

  • Mets exec David Stearns faces pressure to improve roster to secure his job.
  • Rays ace Drew Rasmussen is a potential trade target due to his contract structure.
  • Mets may trade prospects to acquire starting pitcher amid limited free agency options.

New York Mets executive David Stearns is under pressure to revamp the roster as he seeks to retain his position. Team owner Steve Cohen had previously selected Stearns as president of baseball operations, but his tenure in New York has not been successful so far.

According to SNY’s Danny Abriano, the Mets are considering a trade for Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen, who has a $20 million team option for 2027. Rasmussen is currently under a $5.75 million contract.

Rasmussen has been a standout performer for the Rays this season, posting a 16-5 record with a 2.67 ERA and league-leading 0.913 WHIP. He also nearly no-hit the New York Yankees, making him an attractive target for the Mets.

Despite the Rays’ reluctance to trade a star pitcher, Rasmussen’s contract structure could make him available. The Rays may avoid giving him a multi-year deal after 2027 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent at age 32.

The Mets, who lack top prospects, may be willing to trade young players acquired before the trade deadline to acquire Rasmussen. Six of their best seven prospects are infielders, which could influence the trade negotiations.

However, the Mets’ preference for avoiding long-term contracts for pitchers over 30 could pose a challenge. Stearns and the team may need to adjust this stance to secure a quality starting pitcher in the coming months.
