The Brief

  • Villa Vie halted operations after fuel costs surged beyond cost-cutting measures.
  • Around 200 passengers were ordered to disembark in Sihanoukville.
  • The voyage, initially set for 3.5 years, ended after over 750 days.

Villa Vie, the operator of the luxury cruise Odyssey, announced on Tuesday it would suspend operations due to unsustainable fuel costs. The company had implemented measures to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, but these steps were insufficient to offset the sharp rise in global fuel prices.

Fuel costs for Villa Vie rose dramatically, with monthly expenses per cabin increasing from approximately £1,350 to £6,000. The company stated it would spend the next 60 days on restructuring and recapitalisation, though no outcome was guaranteed.

Passengers were ordered to disembark in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after more than 750 days of travel. The cruise, which departed Belfast in October 2024 for a continuous global voyage, had been delayed by maintenance and administrative issues before its journey began.

The passengers, who signed up for a three-and-a-half-year journey across nearly 150 countries, now face an abrupt end to their adventure. Some have decided to leave the cruise and travel on land, with others staying in hotels across the region.

Despite the unexpected conclusion, some passengers expressed that the experience was worthwhile. They highlighted the friendships made, the places visited, and the adventures experienced during their time on the cruise.

Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin plan to spend a few days in Sihanoukville before continuing their travels in Southeast Asia, seeking to determine their next steps.
