The Brief

  • Laviolette returned to MSG on Oct. 26 as the Rangers fell 6-3 to the Kings.
  • He previously coached the Rangers from 2023 to 2025, leading them to the Presidents' Trophy.
  • Laviolette has coached six NHL teams, including the Hurricanes, Flyers, and Predators.

Peter Laviolette, former head coach of the New York Rangers, returned to Madison Square Garden on October 26 for the first time since his departure in April 2025. The Rangers lost 6-3 to the Los Angeles Kings in the game.

Laviolette was relieved of his coaching duties in April 2025 after two seasons with the Rangers. During his tenure, the team won the Presidents' Trophy, setting franchise records for wins and points as they captured the NHL regular-season championship.

Prior to the game, Laviolette reflected on his time with the Rangers, calling it 'a tale of two years.' He described the first season as successful, with the team reaching the conference final, while the second year faced challenges.

Drew Doughty led the Kings' scoring with three points in the game. Former Rangers associate coach Phil Housley and player Artemi Panarin, who was traded to the Kings, also joined Laviolette on the Kings' coaching staff.

Laviolette praised the New York fanbase and the atmosphere at Madison Square Garden, calling it one of the greatest sports markets in the country. His current coaching record stands at 849-568-25-163.

The Kings next face the Ottawa Senators in their next game, with Laviolette set to continue his coaching career in Los Angeles.
