Lamar Jackson to Undergo Surgery, Join Injured Reserve
Ravens quarterback faces four-week absence after thumb injury sustained in loss to Bills.
The Brief
- Jackson requires surgery for thumb injury, will miss at least four weeks.
- Ravens down to undrafted rookie QB after multiple quarterback injuries.
- Jackson's injury adds to recent struggles for Ravens' playoff hopes.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson left Sunday's game against the Bills with a right thumb injury sustained on Baltimore's first offensive play. He will need surgery to repair the injury and will be placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least four weeks.
Head coach Jesse Minter announced the update following the Ravens' 36-10 loss to the Bills. The team did not specify the exact nature of the injury, and Minter said the severity was still uncertain.
Jackson took contact on his hand after his first pass of the game and immediately left the field, walking directly to the locker room. Tyler Huntley took over as quarterback, but he was later ruled out with a toe injury in the second quarter.
The Ravens were forced to turn to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards with one interception. Fagnano, who was not active Sunday, was listed as the team's emergency quarterback.
Jackson, returning from a high-ankle sprain that kept him out for three games, now faces another extended absence. The injury complicates the Ravens' playoff chances, as they are currently 4-4 with their star quarterback sidelined.
Jackson, 29, is in his fourth season of a five-year, $260 million contract. His injury adds to a pattern of setbacks, including missed games and limited play last season, which contributed to the Ravens finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs.
