The Brief

  • Doncic scored 42 points in the Lakers' 138-117 win over the Heat.
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo praised Doncic as one of the best scorers in the game.
  • Doncic's performance raised his league-leading scoring average to 38.8 points per game.

Luka Doncic contributed 42 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat on Monday. The performance marked his fourth 40-plus-point game in his last five contests.

Doncic's scoring average climbed to 38.8 points per game, leading the league. The performance also prompted praise from Miami's Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is averaging the fourth-most points in the league but still trails Doncic by nearly 10 points.

Antetokounmpo, after the game, stated that Doncic is one of the best scorers in the game, if not the best. When asked if Doncic was the best of all time, Antetokounmpo replied, 'Not right now. Of all time.'

Doncic's career scoring average of 29.32 points places him behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. His performance against the Heat was his fifth consecutive game with 20-plus points in the first half, a feat not seen by a Lakers player since Kobe Bryant in 2007.

In his past five games, Doncic has averaged 43.4 points while shooting 53.2% from the field, 44.7% from 3-point range, and 89.1% from the free throw line. He also added 13 assists, handling Miami's double teams effectively.

Lakers coach JJ Redick highlighted the team's offensive success, noting the 39 assists were the most since Redick took over as coach. He credited Doncic for bending the defense and creating problems with his shotmaking.
