The Brief

  • Katie Suarez was on a run near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge when she was stabbed.
  • She had planned to meet her parents after work but was attacked before the meeting.
  • Suarez was found stabbed twice in the neck near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway.

A 28-year-old jogger was stabbed in the neck on a Brooklyn promenade Friday night, according to law-enforcement sources. The victim, Katie Suarez, had spoken to her father on the phone just minutes before the attack.

Suarez, a bank teller, had met with her mother shortly after leaving work around 6:30 p.m. They gathered near the TD Bank in the Bay Parkway shopping plaza, where she had worked for more than five years.

Suarez had already changed into her running gear and handed her mother her work clothes before heading off for a run along the Belt Parkway. Her father eventually joined her mother and called her around 8 p.m. to discuss a meeting location.

Suarez told her father she was about half a mile away, a 5-minute jog, and there were no red flags in the conversation. Shortly after, she failed to arrive at the meeting spot, prompting her parents to search for her.

Her father found her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, where she had been stabbed twice in the neck. He frantically asked a passer-by to call 911. Investigators believe the attack was random with no indication of a sex-crime motive or robbery.

Suarez was able to run approximately 100 feet after the attack before collapsing. Blood was found splattered on a nearby guardrail. Police have launched a manhunt for the attacker.
