Italy's luxury hotel boom hits new high with over 100 five-star properties in Rome
New luxury hotels in Florence, Venice, and Lake Como highlight Italy's growing high-end tourism market.
The Brief
- Over 100 five-star hotels now operate in Rome, with rising numbers in Venice and Florence.
- Luxury hotels are being built in historic sites like palazzos, banks, and monasteries.
- New hotels include Villa Petrucci in Florence, Airelles Palladio in Venice, and Miralago Luxury Apartments on Lake Como.
Italy's high-end tourism sector has seen a surge in luxury hotel openings, with more than 100 five-star properties now operating in Rome. This growth is attributed to the Jubilee year in Rome in 2025 and the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026, which have spurred significant investment in the sector.
New luxury hotels are being developed in historic locations such as palazzos, banks, and monasteries. These properties are part of a broader trend of transforming historic buildings into high-end accommodations, offering guests a blend of historical charm and modern comfort.
Villa Petrucci in Florence is one such example, a restored 1930s villa located on a hill overlooking the city. The property, managed by Mandarin Oriental, features mid-century modern decor, private apartments, and a prime location just 15 minutes from Florence’s main attractions.
In Venice, Airelles Palladio has transformed a Renaissance architectural complex into a luxury hotel. The property includes a former academy for dowry-less girls, a cocktail bar overlooking the Giudecca Canal, and a spa with a Roman pool. The hotel also features a restaurant led by renowned chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa and Jean-Georges Vongerichten.
On Lake Como, Miralago Luxury Apartments offer eight apartments with modern interiors and access to the facilities of the nearby Villa d’Este. The property is located near Villa d’Este and provides guests with proximity to local attractions.
