India Win Toss, Opt to Bowl First in 47-Over ODI
India captain Shubman Gill chooses to bowl first against New Zealand in revised match conditions.
The Brief
- India won the toss and elected to bowl first in the 47-over match.
- Both teams confirmed they are using the same playing XI as the previous game.
- Match conditions include overcast weather and a wet outfield.
India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bowl first against New Zealand in the second ODI at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Saturday, November 7. The match was delayed due to rain and a wet outfield, reducing it to 47 overs per side.
Gill cited the overcast conditions and the pitch being under covers for the past couple of days as factors in his decision. He also confirmed that India will field the same XI as the previous match.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner stated his team would have preferred to bowl first but would aim to post a competitive score. Santner confirmed that New Zealand have made no changes to their playing XI.
Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull noted that the pitch has moisture and could assist fast bowlers in the early stages. He warned that the surface may lead to mistimed shots and that the first 10 to 12 overs could be challenging for batters.
During the toss, visible moisture was present on the pitch. Gill wiped his hands after rubbing them against the surface, indicating the conditions supported India's decision to bowl first.
The revised match format includes adjustments to bowling and powerplay rules. A maximum of two bowlers can bowl 10 overs each, while the rest can bowl up to nine overs. Powerplay overs are now 1-10, 11-38, and 39-47.
India lead the ODI series 1-0 after winning the first match in Auckland by five wickets under the DLS method. New Zealand need a win to level the three-match series.
