The Brief

  • Typing 'zelda' on Google's homepage displays the Master Sword from the game.
  • Clicking the sword triggers a time-travel effect, showing Google's 1998 interface.
  • The effect is limited to the Zelda search results page only.

Google has introduced a new easter egg tied to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. The feature appears when users search for 'zelda' on the Google homepage.

Upon searching, the Master Sword from the game appears at the screen's corner, hovering above its pedestal in the Temple of Time. Clicking the sword places it in the pedestal, initiating a time-travel effect.

The time-travel effect mimics the game's mechanics, with Link shouting and a screen transition that visually transports the user back to 1998. This reveals an older version of Google's interface, featuring simple text results and the 'I’m feeling lucky' option.

The 1998 version of Google lacks modern features like AI assistants and has a more basic design. The effect is confined to the Zelda search results page and does not extend to other parts of the site.

Google has a history of including game-related easter eggs. For example, searching for 'do a barrel roll' causes the page to spin, and typing 'super mario bros' brings up a Question Block that produces a coin sound.

Another existing easter egg involves searching for 'the last of us', which displays a red mushroom that, when clicked, spreads a fungus-like effect across the screen.
