The Brief

  • Raphael Glucksmann won the centre-left primary with 66% of the vote.
  • His victory threatens alliances between left-wing parties and Melenchon.
  • Glucksmann faces Marine Le Pen in potential May runoff.

Raphael Glucksmann, an EU lawmaker, secured the centre-left presidential primary in France on Sunday. The result positions him as the main alternative to hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Glucksmann, 46, led the Place Publique movement and won the primary in a first-round vote, achieving an outright majority with 66% of the vote.

More than 120,000 people participated in the primary, significantly fewer than the 2.8 million who took part in the Socialists’ 2011 primary, which was won by Francois Hollande.

Glucksmann opposes any alliance with Melenchon and has called for a break with Macronism and Melenchon’s dominance over the French left.

His victory is a setback for Socialist Party head Olivier Faure, who had been open to alliances with Melenchon’s France Unbowed party and received only 14.5% of the vote.

Opinion polls suggest Glucksmann could reach a May 2 runoff against Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate, but would likely lose to her.
