The Brief

  • Germany's foreign minister reiterates support for Ukraine's president following Trump's call for his removal.
  • Germany will maintain sanctions against Russia despite U.S. lifting some sanctions on Russian fuel.
  • Officials stress need for more pressure on Russia to engage in peace talks.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany's support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday, following U.S. President Donald Trump's call for his removal.

Wadephul stated that Germany remains committed to Ukraine and its government, fully backing Zelenskiy as he fulfills his duties.

The remarks came after Trump, who recently announced a diesel supply deal with Russia, urged Ukraine to replace Zelenskiy and criticized Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.

Germany, the largest European donor to Ukraine, confirmed it will continue sanctions against Russia despite Trump's announcement of temporarily lifting U.S. sanctions on Russian fuel.

Wad, who met his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month, said 'consistency and clarity' were needed to support Ukraine and bring Moscow to negotiate.

He added, 'We don't need less pressure, we need more pressure on Putin to make him be ready to negotiate. That is what this moment requires and that's what the government stands for.'

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also spoke with Zelenskiy, reaffirming the UK's commitment to strengthening sanctions against Russia.
