Founder Blames EA's Acquisition For Mass Effect Studio Closure
BioWare founder says Saudi fund's acquisition sealed studio's fate.
The Brief
- Founder claims EA's 2023 acquisition was 'final nail in the coffin' for Mass Effect studio.
- He believes new owners prioritize sports and Battlefield over other genres.
- Founder says he won't return to game development or reclaim BioWare name.
BioWare founder said EA's acquisition by Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners in August was the 'final nail in the coffin' for the Mass Effect studio.
He believes anything that isn’t sports or Battlefield is likely 'extraneous' in the eyes of the new owners.
Zeschuk has had to create an 'emotional break' so as to not spend too much time 'second-guessing' his decisions 20 years ago. Despite this, he still advocates for game developers, saying Mass Effect cannot be recreated with 'random people and AI.'
He also noted that the people that go down the business track never really come from the development track. 'Because none of these people have ever made a game, like, never really sat and made one, like, from start to finish, even a small thing, they just don’t know how it works.'
Despite his feelings, Zeschuk has no plans to return to game development or reclaim the BioWare name and rights to Mass Effect.
