The Brief
- Flávio Bolsonaro and his family arrived in Miami after fleeing Brazil.
- Bolsonaro traveled through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching Miami.
- He faces corruption and tax evasion charges in Brazil.
Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate, and his family landed in Miami on Wednesday after fleeing the country following his election loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
According to Argentinian immigration officials, Bolson, aro and his family entered Argentina via a border checkpoint and boarded a private charter plane. Flight data showed the plane landed in Ecuador before proceeding to Miami.
Bolsonaro is under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. The court had ordered him to surrender his passports by noon Tuesday, though it remained unclear if he complied.
Lula, who turned 81 on Tuesday, criticized Bolsonaro’s decision to leave Brazil, calling it a 'shameful' act. He expressed regret that Bolsonaro had not stayed to 'prove the accusations are not true.'
Bolsonaro’s route through Argentina could strain diplomatic relations between Lula’s government and Argentine President Javier Milei, a Trump ally who supported Bolsonaro’s campaign.
Trump has welcomed Bolsonaro in the U.S., calling him and his family 'fine people,' and questioned the fairness of Brazil’s election. However, global leaders and the Organization of American States have endorsed Lula’s victory.
