The Brief

  • Egypt's Petroleum Minister met with Honeywell's president at ADIPEC 2026.
  • Ministry plans six refinery upgrade projects with $4 billion in investment.
  • Honeywell's Ecofining technology will be used in Egypt's first SAF project.

Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, met with Anant Maheshwari, President of Strategy and Global Regions at Honeywell Technologies, during ADIPEC 2026. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration between Egypt and Honeywell in refining and emissions monitoring projects.

Badawi outlined the ministry’s program to modernize oil refineries, which includes six projects with an estimated investment of $4 billion. He emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with Honeywell, citing the company’s existing work with Egyptian refineries such as MIDOR and ANRPC.

The program aims to increase the production of high-value petroleum products like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. This is expected to meet a larger share of domestic demand and reduce the import bill. In May, Egypt’s ESAF signed an agreement with Honeywell to use its Ecofining technology for the country’s first sustainable aviation fuel project in Alexandria.

The project is projected to cut aviation-related carbon emissions by approximately 400,000 tons annually. Egyptian refineries currently operate at around 80% utilization rates, highlighting the need for modern technologies to improve efficiency and production economics.

The meeting also discussed the introduction of smart control solutions using AI to optimize operational management, enhance energy efficiency, and improve safety and reliability. Discussions also covered efforts to meet Egypt’s commitments under the Global Methane Pledge, with Honeywell’s advanced solutions for emissions detection and monitoring highlighted.

In the petrochemicals sector, Badawi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with Honeywell to support ECHEM’s five-year plan for 2026–2030. This includes providing advanced technologies, expanding training programs, transferring expertise, and developing the technical skills of Egyptian engineers to improve workforce efficiency.
