The Brief

  • Max Verstappen led the S tier despite a qualifying lock-up.
  • Liam Lawson scored a midfield win after penalties.
  • Kimi Antonelli secured the title but had a slow weekend.

Edd Straw released his second set of F1 driver rankings following the Mexican Grand Prix. The rankings assess individual performances across the weekend, with some drivers benefiting from mitigating circumstances.

Max Verstappen was ranked in the S tier, despite a lock-up that ruined his final qualifying lap. His strong pace and decision-making helped Red Bull recover from a difficult Friday, though a one-place grid penalty for Liam Lawson slightly affected his standing.

Ryo Hirakawa was judged by generous standards due to taking over Esteban Ocon's seat. He flirted with reaching Q2 before hitting Alex Albon's turbulent air, then passed both Williams drivers in the race for a well-deserved point after penalties.

Liam Lawson recovered from setbacks to score points. Despite the red flag timing not helping him, he made steady progress and surged from 15th at the standing restart to take what was ultimately the midfield win after penalties were applied.

Lewis Hamilton had a strong weekend, with his first pole position since 2022. However, a mistake at Turn 4, where both drivers braked too late, cost him a potential swap with Verstappen. His performance was otherwise strong.

Sergio Perez was penalized for speeding in the pits but attributed the incident to a sensor problem. Despite a poor qualifying session, he raced superbly in the first stint before losing time to a wheelgun issue and a later penalty.
