A $48 DIY e-paper display kit from Seeed Studio and TRMNL allows users to customize their always-on information feed without a subscription. The device, developed in collaboration with TRMNL, runs on open-source firmware and offers multiple setup options.
TRMNL, founded by Ryan Kulp in 2023, partnered with Seeed Studio in July 2025 to create the kit. Seeed provides the hardware, while TRMNL maintains the firmware and hosted service. Users can choose between a hosted service, self-hosted server, or third-party platforms like Home Assistant.
The kit includes a 7.5-inch monochrome e-paper display, a 2,000 mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery, and a Wi-Fi antenna. It also comes with two 3D-printable case designs. Assembly requires some effort, including routing a fragile ribbon cable through a narrow space.
The TRMNL service offers a 14-day free trial with a $1 registration fee, followed by a one-time $50 license fee for continued access. The service includes plugins for calendars, weather, and niche content like rotating factoids about the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition in Star Trek. Users can also self-host the service using a private server.
Seeed also offers SenseCraft, a similar marketplace that provides a browser-based tool for flashing firmware and a marketplace of community plugins. While some plugins may be incompatible with the device, SenseCraft does not require a license fee.
For users who prefer full control, TRMNL’s Terminus setup allows self-hosting on a homelab server. The process involves running an open source container, which can be complex for some. However, it offers a customizable experience and avoids subscription fees.
