The Brief

  • Canada faces Denmark in a rematch at BMO Field on Monday.
  • Canada drew 1-1 with Denmark in a previous friendly in Montreal.
  • Stoney emphasizes the need for better clinical finishing in attack.

Canada's head coach, Casey Stoney, has called for improved finishing from her team ahead of Monday's friendly against Denmark. The match will take place at Toronto's BMO Field.

In their previous friendly on Friday in Montreal, Canada and Denmark ended in a 1-1 draw, with Olivia Smith scoring the equalizer in the 84th minute. Despite controlling most of the match with 69% possession and a 21-9 edge in shot attempts, Canada failed to capitalize on several chances.

Stoney acknowledged the team's positive aspects but stressed the need for more patience and precision in the final third. She pointed out that crossing the ball without sufficient numbers in the box often led to missed opportunities, and the team must focus on waiting for the right moments to create quality chances.

Stoney also mentioned the importance of possibly shooting from distance a bit more. She noted that while Canada entered the final third multiple times, the lack of execution or decision-making often led to missed chances, a key area for improvement ahead of the match.

Stoney is still seeking her first win against a top-15 opponent since taking over as Canada's coach in January 2024. The upcoming match against Denmark serves as key preparation for Canada's quarterfinal against Panama at the CONCACAF W Championship on November 28.

Denmark, which has already qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, will be a strong opponent. Canada holds a 3-3-1 all-time record against Denmark, and the team is determined to secure a win for valuable preparation ahead of the high-stakes tournament.

Allysha Chapman was expected to make her 100th and final international appearance for Canada.
