The Brief

  • A Polish gunman killed six people in Krakow before being shot and arrested by police.
  • Three additional bodies were found at the shooter's home in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski.
  • The suspect was identified as a 24-year-old Polish citizen with a firearms licence.

A Polish gunman killed six people in the main square of Krakow before being shot and arrested by police, officials said on Saturday. Three additional bodies were found at his home in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, approximately 200 kilometers north of Krakow.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that the shooter was likely influenced by far-right ideology, a matter under investigation. Police confirmed that one of the deceased was a British citizen, and five foreign nationals were injured in the attack.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that two women and one man were found at the shooter's home. He mentioned that a drone was used to inspect the property due to potential security threats, and that a significant amount of weaponry may be present.

Local media reported that residents were evacuated from the building where the gunman lived, and counterterrorism officers entered the premises. The Internal Security Agency and Military Counterintelligence Service are assisting with the investigation.

The shooter was wearing military-like clothing and used military weapons, according to a police spokesperson. He was found in possession of an AR-15 rifle and had a firearms licence. The only known perpetrator is currently in police custody, with no motive disclosed.

Shooting reports began around 3 p.m., with the suspect firing randomly at people in the square. Unverified footage showed people fleeing the scene, and several individuals were seen lying on blood-stained pavement. Witnesses described the chaos and the immediate danger faced by civilians.
