The Brief

  • Power outages and downed trees reported in multiple counties.
  • Emergency management teams deployed for flood response.
  • Flash flood warnings issued for several western NC counties.

Remnants of Hurricane Isaias are causing heavy rain and gusty winds in western North Carolina, leading to power outages and downed trees in several areas. Duke Energy reported ongoing efforts to restore power and advised staying away from downed lines.

The National Weather Service has issued flood watches and flash flood warnings for multiple counties, including Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Polk, Rutherford, and others. These warnings indicate potential for excessive runoff, flooding of rivers and streams, and isolated flooding in low-lying areas.

Emergency management teams have deployed resources to affected areas. For example, Mooresville Fire-Rescue sent 12 members to Yancey County for Swift Water Rescue. In McDowell County, officials reported flash flooding and a landslide on NC-226A, with road closures and warnings to avoid flooded areas.

Local authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow evacuation orders. In Rutherford County, Lake Lure officials opened the dam’s tainter gates to increase water flow, and flood sirens were activated in the Fall Creek area. Residents and visitors near the Rocky Broad River in the Chimney Rock and Lake Lure areas are urged to move away from the river and seek higher ground immediately.

Duke Energy crews are working to restore power in areas affected by outages, though full restoration may take until Sunday.
