The Brief

  • Protests turn violent in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg.
  • Police use water cannons and report multiple arrests.
  • Organizers demand better support for education and healthcare.

Rioters looted shops in central Frankfurt on Saturday, leading to clashes with police. Similar incidents occurred in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg, where authorities deployed water cannons to disperse protesters.

Thousands participated in demonstrations organized by Gen Z regelt, a campaign group advocating for better education funding, reduced living costs, and an end to compulsory military service.

German authorities reported up to 18,000 protesters in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, which is about half of the number organizers had expected. Police closed a major shopping street in Frankfurt and made numerous arrests.

Frankfurt police noted that shops were targeted, with windows smashed and molotov cocktails thrown at emergency services. Later reports indicated that a gun shop was also damaged, and two weapons were seized during arrests.

Hesse state interior minister Roman Poseck claimed that around 100 left-wing extremists had infiltrated the Frankfurt protest, describing the outcome as 'shameful.' He criticized the use of France as a model for such demonstrations, citing incidents of looting and attacks on police.

Gen Z regelt spokesperson Lina Friedrich emphasized that the protests were aimed at 'fighting for peace and freedom,' not war or coercion. She highlighted demands for improved support for health and education systems and an end to compulsory military service.
