Venus Williams and her doubles partner Janice Tjen were defeated in the Guangzhou Open semifinals by Polina Kuderemetova and Maria Timofeeva with a score of 6-4, 6-7 (8), 10-6 on Saturday.
This marks Williams’ first WTA Tour doubles semifinal since the 2016 Rio Olympics and Wimbledon, and her first overall tour semifinal since 2018 at Indian Wells, California.
Williams was granted wild-card entries for both singles and doubles at the WTA 250 tournament in Guangzhou. She lost her singles match on Tuesday to 18-year-old Austrian player Lilli Tagger in straight sets.
