Twin Girls Confirmed Identical After DNA Test
DNA test reveals Sydney mother's twins are identical despite appearing fraternal.
The Brief
- Rebecca Michels' twin daughters were confirmed identical after a DNA test.
- The test was suggested by nurses due to the twins' similarity.
- The result showed a 16 billion to one chance of being identical.
Rebecca Michels, 37, of Sydney, learned that her twin daughters, Capri and Kenzie, are identical after a DNA test. The result indicated a 99.999999994 percent probability that the twins are identical.
The twins, born on May 28, 2025, were initially thought to be fraternal because they were in separate sacs with separate placentas during pregnancy. Nurses suggested a DNA test four days after birth due to their striking resemblance.
Michels and her husband had assumed the twins were fraternal based on the ultrasound, which showed separate sacs and placentas. However, medical experts note that separate placentas do not always indicate fraternal twins.
According to Twins Research Australia, one-third of identical twins have separate placentas, which is the same as fraternal twins. A DNA zygosity test is the only reliable way to determine if twins are identical or fraternal.
The DNA test was conducted in July 2025, and the result was received three days later. The test confirmed that the twins are 16 billion times more likely to be identical than fraternal, with a probability of 99.999999994 percent.
Michels described the result as a 'lovely ending to all the surprises,' noting that the twins' appearance had led her to question their zygosity from the beginning.
