The Brief

  • Trump signed an executive order to prevent future presidents from making certain changes to the Oval Office.
  • The order instructs the National Park Service to maintain the Oval Office in a way that protects its historic character, architectural integrity, and its association with the presidency.
  • The move comes amid ongoing legal battles over historic preservation laws.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to prevent future presidents from making certain changes to the Oval Office. The order aims to preserve the space as a national monument.

The directive instructs the National Park Service to maintain the Oval Office in a manner that protects its historic character, architectural integrity, and its association with the presidency.

The Oval Office, which has existed since the early 1990s, is part of a building already designated as a National Historic Landmark. Congress has carved out an exemption to the National Historic Preservation Act to allow presidents to make needed changes.

Trump's order does not restrict the president's authority to redecorate the monument, select furnishings, or make ordinary operational and security modifications that do not substantially impair the monument's historic structure or architectural character.

Lawsuits have been filed to block projects such as renovations at the Kennedy Center and the construction of a new triumphal arch. The firm Cultural Heritage Partners, which specializes in historic preservation, has filed lawsuits to block two of these projects.

In October, Trump suggested that the Oval Office might need to be torn down due to security concerns, though the order signed this week does not address that claim directly.
