Trump claims Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire agreed
Ukrainian leader says he was not informed of the alleged agreement.
The Brief
- Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
- Zelenskyy stated he was unaware of the ceasefire and said Ukraine would agree if Russia did.
- European leaders expressed support for a ceasefire but no confirmation from Russia.
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement to halt strikes on each other's energy infrastructure, calling it an 'ENERGY CEASEFIRE' in the war between the two nations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was not informed of the ceasefire and stated that Ukraine would agree to it if Russia did, according to a statement he gave to Axios.
Ukraine's allies were awaiting details of the ceasefire, which Trump had announced, with Zelenskyy emphasizing Ukraine's support for de-escalation efforts.
French President Emmanuel Macron supported a 'real energy ceasefire' between Ukraine and Russia, citing high diesel prices, while EU chief Ursula von der Leyen also backed Zelenskyy's call for a ceasefire to protect global energy infrastructure.
Russia has not confirmed the agreement, with no immediate response from the country following an escalation in attacks in the war. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would accept the ceasefire if Trump negotiated it with Putin.
Zelenskyy also responded to Trump's suggestion that Ukraine should have a new leader, stating that the people of Ukraine should decide their leadership, and that elections could be held if Russia agreed to a 60-day total ceasefire.
