The Brief

  • Silicone brushes are replacing traditional plastic ones in many homes.
  • They are non-porous, rinse clean, and dry faster than bristle brushes.
  • Regular cleaning and replacement schedules are still needed for hygiene.

A growing number of households are replacing traditional plastic toilet brushes with silicone alternatives, according to reports from Scandinavia and Central Europe. These new brushes are designed to be more hygienic and easier to clean.

Silicone brushes feature a flat or flexible head and are non-porous, which means they rinse clean and dry faster than plastic bristles. Cleaning experts note that this material does not absorb bacteria or organic matter as easily as plastic.

Despite their advantages, silicone brushes are not a complete solution. They are weaker on stubborn, dried-on grime compared to stiff bristles. Some models, particularly those with flat or spatula-style heads, perform better on hard-to-remove dirt, though they require a different cleaning technique.

Proper maintenance is still essential for hygiene. Experts recommend rinsing the brush after each use, spraying with disinfectant or hydrogen peroxide, and allowing it to drip dry. Weekly deep cleaning with hot water and bleach or vinegar is also advised, though mixing the two should be avoided.

To prevent bacterial growth, users should choose open or ventilated holders for their brushes. Regular replacement is necessary, with silicone brushes needing to be changed every 3 months if only rinsed, or every 6 to 12 months with weekly cleaning.

No brush, silicone or bristle, is designed to dissolve the hard mineral ring at the waterline. Keeping a brush damp in a closed holder can still lead to bacterial buildup, regardless of the material used.
