THC Gummies Use Tryptophan Found in Turkey
A company creates sleep gummies with tryptophan and cannabinoids, reimagining the Thanksgiving sleep myth.
The Brief
- TribeTokes makes THC gummies with tryptophan, a compound found in turkey.
- Each gummy contains 10mg THC, 20mg CBN, 250mg tryptophan, and 1mg vitamin B6.
- The product is marketed for bedtime use, not as a Thanksgiving appetizer.
TribeTokes has developed a THC gummy designed for bedtime, incorporating tryptophan, the amino acid commonly associated with turkey and sleepiness. The product is marketed as a sleep aid, not as a Thanksgiving dish.
Each mixed berry Sleep Gummy contains 10mg THC, 20mg CBN, 250mg L-tryptophan, and 1mg vitamin B6. It does not include melatonin, a common ingredient in sleep supplements.
The connection between tryptophan and sleep is based on its role in producing serotonin and melatonin, hormones that regulate the sleep-wake cycle. However, turkey is not unique in containing tryptophan, as many other foods also have it.
A 2022 research review suggested that tryptophan supplementation may help reduce nighttime wakefulness at higher doses, but the 250mg in these gummies is significantly lower than the recommended amount. The THC and CBN in the gummies are expected to have a more substantial impact on sleep.
TribeTokes also offers a CBD version of the Sleep Gummies, which replaces THC with CBD while keeping the same levels of CBN, tryptophan, and vitamin B6. Both versions are priced at $45 for 20 gummies.
The company advises starting with a quarter to half a gummy for first-time users, as the full dose of 10mg THC can be potent. Edible effects may take up to two hours to become noticeable, and the brand warns against combining the gummies with alcohol due to increased impairment risks.
