The Brief

  • Thailand, Brunei, and Cambodia express interest in joining Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore in a unified approach to social media regulation.
  • Regional cooperation is expected to strengthen pressure on platforms to comply with new rules.
  • A Kuala Lumpur Declaration from the ASEAN Summit last year supports the initiative.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stated that Thailand, Brunei, and Cambodia are eager to align with Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore on social media regulations.

Fahmi emphasized that a unified regional stance would make it easier for social media platforms to implement new rules across Southeast Asia.

The minister noted that platforms consider the entire market when deciding on policy changes, and a majority regional agreement could influence their decisions.

Fahmi mentioned that Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore had agreed during a Bali meeting to collaborate on this issue, drawing lessons from New Mexico and Australia's approaches.

The Kuala Lumpur Declaration, adopted at the ASEAN Summit in October 2023, has facilitated much of the current coordination efforts.

The Safe Internet campaign will be updated annually to address emerging scam tactics and new platforms like Threads.
