James Talarico, the newest US senator from Texas, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after a medical emergency during his 2018 campaign for the Texas House of Representatives.
Talarico walked 25 miles on foot in one day during his campaign, including three town halls, despite his usual hiking routine in Big Bend National Park.
During the walk, he experienced fatigue, nausea, and vomiting, which he initially attributed to dehydration.
After 36 hours without waking, Talarico was taken to the emergency room, where his blood sugar level was found to be 900 mg/dL, far above the normal fasting level of under 100 mg/dL.
Doctors diagnosed him with diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition that can lead to coma or death without insulin treatment.
Talarico was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the hospital, a condition that typically begins in childhood and has no known cause.
