Tesla to Discontinue Cybertruck
Tesla's CEO announced plans to stop producing the Cybertruck next year.
The Brief
- Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year.
- The decision follows weak sales and a shift toward AI and robotics.
- Cybercab robotaxis will use the factory space previously dedicated to the Cybertruck.
Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, announced on X that the company will cease production of the Cybertruck next year. The factory space will be used for Cybercab robotaxis.
The Cybertruck, first unveiled in 2019, has sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years. Musk initially projected annual sales of 250,000, but the vehicle has not met those expectations.
Tesla is expanding its robotaxi operations, including testing Cybercabs in Austin, Texas. The company plans to expand to Dallas later this month.
This marks the third product Tesla has discontinued to prioritize its AI and robotics initiatives. The company has also stopped producing the Model S sedan and Model X SUV to focus on Optimus humanoid robots.
Despite its ambitious design and marketing, the Cybertruck faced delays, inflated pricing, and mixed reception. The base price had inflated to around $60,000, and the top-end range had shrunk by over 100 miles.
The Cybertruck's polarizing design and association with Musk's political activities, including his support for Donald Trump, have also contributed to its limited market success.
