Speedrunner Breaks Mario World Record in Costume
Niftski sets new time in Halloween-themed stream.
The Brief
- Niftski shaved 0.33 seconds off the world record in Super Mario Bros.
- He completed the run while dressed as Mario and speaking in the character's voice.
- Niftski previously held the record for the most white knuckle run in the game.
Niftski, a speedrunner and record holder for Super Mario Bros., broke the world record during a Halloween stream. He dressed as Mario and spoke in the character's voice, completing the run in 4:54.299.
The run shaved 0.33 seconds off the previous world record, with Niftski finishing just two frames away from a perfect run. He remarked, 'Hopefully I don’t get this today because that would be very stupid,' moments before achieving it.
At 22 years old, Niftski has set numerous records in Mario’s first side-scrolling adventure. He holds the current records for warpless, glitchless, and the most white knuckle run, with the latter set in August at 4:54.332.
During the five-hour stream, Niftski occasionally expressed frustration with the costume, joking that fans could blame his mom for buying the facial hair prop. However, he credited the Mario persona for helping him stay calm and focused during the run.
