A shooting occurred late on Halloween night near the University of Delaware campus, leaving six individuals injured. The incident took place at 11:13 p.m. on East Main Street, according to Newark Police, who reported a large gathering at the time.

All six victims were transported to a local hospital. The ages of the victims range from 15 to 21 years old, with five remaining hospitalized in serious condition and one released after treatment for a graze wound to the leg.

During the investigation, officers located a 16-year-old victim who was found in possession of a loaded firearm. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 21, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and breach of release. He was issued $60,100 cash bail and remains in police custody.

The University of Delaware has suspended all classes—both in-person and virtual—on Monday, Nov. 2, to allow the campus community time to process the incident. Classes are set to resume on Wednesday, Nov. 4, following a planned closure for Election Day on Tuesday.

University officials stated the closure was not due to an ongoing safety threat, noting that Newark Police have indicated there is no active threat to the community. Campus dining, operations, and support services remain open, including walk-in counseling at Warner Hall and 24/7 access via TimelyCare.

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer condemned the shooting, stating that no family should have to face the pain of a loved one being shot. He acknowledged the emotional toll on communities in Newark and Ellendale, where a separate Halloween night shooting occurred.
