The Brief
- Lam Yong Yan, 27, was detained in Vietnam for immigration offences since November 19, 2025.
- He was arrested upon arrival in Singapore after completing investigations.
- Lam is linked to a scam ring dismantled in September 2025.
A Singaporean man suspected of involvement in a Cambodian-based scam syndicate was deported from Vietnam and arrested by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) upon arrival at Changi Airport on November 6.
Lam Yong Yan, 27, had been detained by Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security since November 19, 2025, for immigration offences. He was deported after investigations were concluded.
Lam is believed to be a member of a criminal group dismantled by the SPF and Cambodian police in September 2025. The group orchestrated scams targeting Singaporeans through impersonation of government officials.
Police stated that at least 528 victims lost a total of S$53 million (RM168 million) in the scams. Lam will be charged in court on Saturday with facilitating a serious offence in furtherance of an organised criminal group’s illegal activities.
If found guilty, Lam faces a maximum jail term of five years, a fine of up to S$100,000 (RM317,000), or both. He is among 36 people sought by local police.
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Julius Lim, praised Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security for its cooperation in securing Lam’s return. He emphasized that those who commit crimes against Singaporeans will be held accountable.
