Russian Oil Refinery Reportedly Hit by Drone Attack
Ukrainian drone strike suspected in attack on Novokuybyshevsk refinery, marking resumption of energy infrastructure strikes.
The Brief
- Fire broke out at Novokuybyshevsk Oil Refinery after suspected drone attack.
- Attack is described as resumption of strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.
- Refinery owned by Rosneft, processes 8.8 million metric tons of crude oil.
Footage published by Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ suggests a fire broke out at the Novokuybyshevsk Oil Refinery in Russia's Samara Oblast overnight on Oct. 30, following a suspected drone attack.
The channel shared photos and videos from local residents showing widespread fires near the refinery and reports of drones flying overhead.
The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the footage or determine the full extent of the damage.
The attack is being referred to as a 'resumption of strikes' by monitoring channels, marking the first such incident after an unofficial pause in Ukraine’s campaign against Russian oil refineries since mid-October.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Oct. 29 that Ukrainian military units had informally suspended attacks on Russian refineries due to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
Officials familiar with the operations stated the cessation of refinery strikes was expected to continue until after the U.S. midterm elections.
