Richard Berry leads New Mexico Medical Society, focuses on doctor access
New Mexico Medical Society's new CEO aims to improve access to care and attract more doctors to the state.
The Brief
- Richard Berry, former mayor and state legislator, now leads the New Mexico Medical Society.
- The organization recently secured changes to medical malpractice laws to ease doctor shortages.
- Berry's focus is on improving access to care and supporting doctors in New Mexico.
Richard Berry, who previously served as mayor of Albuquerque and a state legislator, has taken on the role of executive director and CEO of the New Mexico Medical Society. The 145-year-old organization is physician-led and has over 1,100 members across the state.
Earlier this year, the New Mexico Legislature and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham approved changes to medical malpractice laws, a victory for the society. These changes were intended to lower costs and address the state’s doctor shortage.
Berry emphasizes that his role is administrative, aimed at helping doctors succeed by supporting their vision. He acknowledges the need to implement the recent law changes while also addressing broader issues like the tax environment, business climate, and workforce development.
Berry, a Republican, previously served as a state representative from 2006 to 2009 and as mayor of Albuquerque from 2009 to 2017. He has also been CEO of Laguna Construction Co. His current focus is on attracting more doctors to New Mexico and improving access to care.
He notes that many New Mexicans face challenges in accessing medical care, including long waits for specialists. Berry believes his experience in public service, particularly in data-driven decision-making, will be valuable in his new role.
Berry plans to focus on advocacy, education, and data collection for the nonprofit organization. He also mentions his personal interest in outdoor activities, music, and a preference for steak with red chile.
