Rex Ryan Responds to Ashton Jeanty's Comments
Jets coach vows to retaliate after Raiders RB insults team defense.
The Brief
- Rex Ryan said he would confront Ashton Jeanty before their game.
- Ryan claimed Jeanty's comments were disrespectful and called him a 'draft bust'.
- Jets rank 24th in rushing yards allowed and lost key defender to injury.
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan responded to comments made by Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, who had criticized the Jets' defense ahead of their Week 8 matchup. Ryan said he would personally address Jeanty before the game.
Ryan, speaking on ESPN New York’s NY Gameday, said he would make sure Jeanty understood the Jets would not intentionally harm him. He also called Jeanty 'soft as cotton' and claimed the player had not performed well in the league.
Ryan added that he would send a strong message to Jeanty during the game, emphasizing that the Jets would not allow him to reach the line of scrimmage. He said the team would blitz frequently and force Jeanty to pass protect.
Ryan also criticized Jeanty for calling some Jets defenders unwilling to tackle, calling it the 'stupidest thing' a player could do. He suggested that Jeanty's comments were especially harsh given his own struggles in the NFL.
The Jets, who rank 24th in rushing yards allowed, face additional challenges after placing starting nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat on injured reserve. The injury is not expected to end his season, but he will miss at least four games.
Jeanty's remarks have reached the Jets' locker room and coaching staff. The team will need to decide whether to respond to the insult and how to contain the Raiders' rushing attack in the upcoming game.
