Presidential Aide Claims Wiretapping of Prabowo Points to Treason
Senior aide says alleged surveillance by former police chief could endanger national security.
The Brief
- State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi claims wiretapping of President Prabowo may constitute treason.
- Government plans to dismiss Listyo Sigit Prabowo from presidential chief of staff role.
- Lieutenant General Aryo Windutomo named acting chief of staff pending replacement.
A senior presidential aide has stated that the alleged illegal wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto by former National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo may be classified as an act of treason. The aide, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, made the claim during a news conference at the Presidential Palace.
Hadi said the government is preparing a presidential decree to remove Listyo from his position as presidential chief of staff. Listyo was previously the National Police chief but was later appointed to the presidential staff role.
Lieutenant General Aryo Windutomo has been appointed acting presidential chief of staff while a permanent replacement is sought. Hadi also mentioned coordination with National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto to ensure uninterrupted police operations during the investigation.
Hadi emphasized that surveillance and wiretapping in Indonesia must be conducted within the legal framework. The government has committed to ensuring all communication interceptions comply with the law and that unauthorized activities are not tolerated.
Listyo was replaced as National Police chief on October 1 but was subsequently appointed to the presidential chief of staff position. Hadi noted the president has expressed concern over the case, with consequences being inevitable due to the involvement of a suspect in a high-ranking role.
