Portland Cafe Cancels Gaza Cafe Plan Amid Backlash
Heretic Coffee ends partnership with Gaza-focused group after community pushback.
The Brief
- Heretic Coffee withdrew from a Gaza cafe project following community backlash.
- Owner Josh White cited poor communication and lack of local input as reasons for the decision.
- HUMANITE Peace Collective will continue the initiative independently.
Heretic Coffee, a Portland-based cafe, has canceled its planned collaboration with a Gaza-focused humanitarian group after facing significant community pushback.
The original plan, announced in mid-September, involved partnering with HUMANITE Peace Collective to raise $100,000 for a community gathering space in Gaza called the Dept. of Peace.
Owner Josh White stated the decision to end the project was mutual with HUMANITE, which will continue the initiative using funds already raised and any additional contributions.
White acknowledged shortcomings in how the project was communicated, noting he failed to engage the local community and provide clear details before proceeding.
He also mentioned that a portion of the funds raised supported an event for children at an orphanage in Gaza before the project was halted.
Heretic Coffee now plans to refocus its efforts on local initiatives rather than the Gaza project.
