The Brief

  • Kinaan was injured by a Hamas rocket in the occupied West Bank in 2023.
  • His parents seek medical help but face barriers from both Palestinian and Israeli authorities.
  • Family struggles to afford treatment as they face financial and legal challenges.

On 7 October 2023, a Hamas rocket struck near Kinaan Dadou’s home in the occupied West Bank, injuring the 7-year-old. The rocket was intended for an Israeli settlement but landed close to his family’s home.

Kinaan suffered a head injury and was rushed to a hospital, but medical help arrived six hours later due to the chaos of the day. His condition worsened, and he entered a persistent vegetative state.

Now 10 years old, Kinaan lies in a hospital bed, unable to speak or move freely. His parents report he is fed through a tube and requires a tracheostomy for breathing.

The Palestinian Authority provided some initial medical care, including surgeries, but has refused to cover further treatment or consistent medication. Israeli authorities, which control much of the family’s life, have not responded to their appeals for help.

The family has sought assistance from both sides, but neither has taken responsibility for Kinaan’s care. Israeli officials claim the area is outside their jurisdiction, despite their control over daily life in the region.

Without financial support, the family cannot afford the estimated $250,000 needed for Kinaan’s treatment. His mother has taken on some medical duties to cut costs, but the burden remains heavy.

Kinaan’s parents express frustration over the lack of support, noting that if their son were Israeli, he would likely receive better care. They continue to seek ways to ease his suffering and alleviate their own guilt.
