Novak builds six-shot lead at Mexico Open
Andrew Novak carded a 62 to take a six-shot advantage heading into the final round.
The Brief
- Novak shot a nine-under 62, including three birdies and an eagle.
- He finished at 23-under 190, primed for his first PGA Tour title.
- Frenchman Pavon and American Ghim trail by six and one shot, respectively.
Andrew Novak extended his lead at the Mexico Open with a nine-under-par 62, building a six-shot advantage over the field. The American built a comfortable margin after the turn, then surged further ahead with a strong back nine performance.
Despite a momentary lapse at the par-5 12th hole, where he lost control of a club twirl, Novak maintained his composure. He followed up with three birdies and an eagle, stretching his lead to as many as seven shots.
Novak finished at 23-under 190, setting the stage for his first individual PGA Tour victory. His only prior win came as part of a team effort at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last year.
The American posted the lowest round of the day while playing in the final group. He followed up his 61 and 62 scores with a 62 on Saturday, demonstrating consistency throughout the tournament.
Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, who carded a 65, closed the gap to six shots, while American Doug Ghim, with a 64, was another shot behind. Ghim noted the challenge of maintaining his position in the final round.
Pavon, who is seeking a runner-up finish to secure his place in the top 100 of the FedEx Cup standings, faces a difficult task. Australia's Karl Vilips, who was the first-round leader after opening with a 62, fell back to 14 shots behind after a strong final round.
