The Brief
- Documentary 'Candelaria Brothers in World War I' will air on New Mexico PBS.
- The film is based on a book by educator Andrés Armijo about his great uncles.
- The brothers served in World War I and kept their wartime experiences private.
New Mexico PBS will broadcast the documentary 'Candelaria Brothers in World War I' as part of its 'Colores!' series on November 7, 2025. The film will also be available for streaming on the PBS app following the broadcast.
The documentary is based on a book written by Andrés Armijo, an educator and cultural researcher from New Mexico. The book, titled 'Candelaria Brothers in World War I: Family History and Genealogy: A Monograph in the Florecimiento Cultural Series,' was published in October 2025.
Armijo's book reconstructs the lives of his great uncles, Gaspar Candelaria and Liberato Nuanes Candelaria, who were born in the Los Candelarias community of Albuquerque’s North Valley. Both brothers enlisted to serve in World War I.
Armijo shared that his tío Gaspar, known as Tata, was wounded multiple times during the war but chose not to fully disclose his injuries to his family. He wrote to his family while stationed in Germany, but withheld details about his condition.
Liberato Nuanes Candelaria, Armijo’s other great uncle, spoke even less about his wartime experiences. According to Armijo, he provided only brief information to the state historian and it is unclear what he shared with his family.
