The Brief

  • JJ Smit took a four-wicket haul in the decider.
  • Namibia defeated Ireland by five wickets in the final match.
  • This was Ireland’s second series loss to an Associate nation.

Namibia achieved their first bilateral One Day International (ODI) series win by defeating Ireland in the final match of the five-game series. The victory marked a historic milestone for the team.

The series decider, played in Windhoek, saw Ireland elect to bat first after the scores were tied at 2-2. Ireland lost their openers, Tim Tector and Andy Balbirnie, for single-digit scores.

Cade Carmichael and Harry Tector attempted to rebuild the innings, but Jack Brassell disrupted their partnership in the 19th over. JJ Smit then took three wickets in an over, dismissing Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker on the first ball of the 23rd over.

Smit continued his dominance, removing Curtis Campher and George Dockrell for ducks, and later dismissed Gavin Hoey for nine in the 33rd over. Ireland were nine wickets down at that stage.

Brassell concluded Ireland’s innings with a dismissal of Jai Moondra in the next over, leaving the visitors at 129. Namibia’s openers set a brisk start in the chase, putting on 40 runs before Moondra struck.

Louren Steenkamp scored 46 off 44 balls, and Gerhard Erasmus contributed 30 off 18 deliveries to keep Namibia on track. Zane Green sealed the victory with a six in the 22nd over, giving Namibia a comfortable win.
