The Brief

  • Antonelli aims to clinch title with 9th-place finish in Sunday's race.
  • Race starts at 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, with 71 laps around the high-altitude track.
  • Hamilton is the only driver to win title at this circuit.

The Mexico City Grand Prix, the 19th round of the Formula 1 season, will take place this weekend. The race will be held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, a 4.3-kilometer track located 2,240 meters above sea level.

The race, scheduled for Sunday, will consist of 71 laps and begin at 2 p.m. local time, which is 4 p.m. EST or 2000 GMT. In the U.S., the event will be broadcast on Apple TV.

Kimi Antonelli, 20, is the focus of the race as he aims to become the youngest driver to win the Formula 1 world title. To secure the championship, Antonelli needs to finish ninth or better, as he is currently within reach of the title.

Lewis Hamilton is the only driver to have won the world title at this circuit, achieving it in 2017 and 2018. Hamilton secured his 2017 title by finishing ninth, the same result Antonelli needs to ensure he cannot be overtaken by George Russell or Hamilton before the season concludes.

Antonelli dominated the United States Grand Prix last week, winning from pole position. His performance in Texas was crucial in tightening his grip on the title. However, he was unable to clinch the championship there due to the results of Russell and Hamilton.

Sergio Pérez will compete in his 300th Formula 1 race at the event, making him the seventh driver in history to reach that milestone. The race also marks the fifth time Max Verstappen has won at the Mexico City GP, holding the record for most victories at the track.
