The Brief

  • Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House to celebrate a localized ceasefire in Oleshky.
  • The ceasefire involved evacuating hundreds of civilians and providing aid to occupied territory.
  • Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised her 'crucial leadership role' in the limited agreement.

First Lady Melania Trump hosted high-level Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House on Thursday to commemorate a localized ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The event marked a humanitarian breakthrough, though it remains limited in scope.

The ceasefire, negotiated by Melania Trump and her senior adviser Marc Beckman, involved the evacuation of hundreds of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The agreement was credited with creating a temporary pause in hostilities, with no attacks reported for several days.

Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Lantratova, who faces sanctions from the U.S., EU, and others, attended the event. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office and Security Service accused her of orchestrating the forced deportation of two Ukrainian children into Russia.

Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who was sanctioned by the U.S. under the Biden administration, praised Melania Trump’s 'crucial leadership role' in the ceasefire. The Trump administration temporarily lifted sanctions against Dmitriev in April 2024 to allow him to attend talks in the U.S.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the ceasefire at the Ibero-American Summit, calling it a 'humanitarian operation' that saved hundreds of lives. He stated that the ceasefire proved 'when Putin wants the fighting to stop, it stops.'

Ukrainian officials, including David Arakhamia and Dmytro Lubinets, attended the event and acknowledged the ceasefire’s significance. Arakhamia noted that the agreement created 'momentum' for future peace efforts, while Lubinets presented state awards to Melania Trump and Beckman.
