Mayon Volcano Shows Minor Activity, 11 Earthquakes in 24 Hours
PHIVOLCS reports Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 with recent seismic and volcanic activity.
The Brief
- Mayon Volcano recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.
- Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 since October 30 eruption.
- PHIVOLCS observes crater glow and sulfur dioxide emissions.
Mayon Volcano in Albay exhibited minor Strombolian activity and recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes over the past 24 hours, according to PHIVOLCS.
The findings are based on PHIVOLCS’ 24-hour monitoring report released on Wednesday.
Strombolian activity refers to occasional, low-level volcanic explosions that shoot lava fragments, ash, and gas into the air from the summit crater.
PHIVOLCS also noted a crater glow, a plume rising 1,600 meters above the crater, and sulfur dioxide emissions of 1,894 tonnes per day.
Ground deformation, described as an 'inflation of the edifice with short-term deflation on the northeastern sector,' was also observed at Mayon.
Mayon, the country’s most active volcano, has been under Alert Level 3 since its moderately explosive eruption on October 30.
PHIVOLCS advised the public against entering the six-kilometer permanent danger zone due to risks such as rockfalls, lava flows, and pyroclastic density currents.
