The Brief

  • Richard Satin experienced severe pain and weight loss after a diabetes diagnosis and blood clot.
  • Doctors initially treated symptoms but failed to identify the root cause of his condition.
  • A surgeon discovered an inflamed part of the small bowel causing the blockage and clot.

Richard Satin was diagnosed with diabetes and a blood clot in his portal vein in October 2025 after experiencing severe pain. Despite treatment, his condition worsened, leading to a loss of appetite and significant weight loss.

Satin's wife, Farrah, grew concerned as he became unable to eat and lost 70 pounds by mid-December. After exhausting all available specialists, he sought help from a concierge doctor, Dr. William Klein, who referred him to Dr. Gary Gecelter.

Gecelter reviewed Satin's case and found an unusual inflammatory issue in his digestive tract, which caused an inflammatory reaction in the blood supply to the stomach, leading to a clot and bowel blockage. Previous doctors had focused only on the clot, not the underlying cause.

In early January, Gecelter performed surgery to remove the inflamed portion of Satin's small bowel. Satin reported feeling better immediately after the procedure, and within days, he was eating and regaining weight.

Satin's daughter, Becky, wrote a heartfelt letter to Gecelter expressing her gratitude for saving her father's life. Gecelter noted the sincerity of the note, which he keeps in his office.

Six months after the surgery, Satin is in good health, has regained much of his weight, and is back to his normal activities, including golf and attending school events. He continues to manage his diabetes with lifestyle changes and remains optimistic about his future.
