The Brief

  • CEO Kathy Villalba apologized to Odyssey residents after fuel shortages forced disembarkation in Cambodia.
  • The apology was later deleted by the company, citing overwhelming media scrutiny.
  • Fuel costs have surged due to the US-Iran conflict, leading to operational suspensions.

Kathy Villalba, CEO of Villa Vie Residences, issued an apology to Odyssey residents after a critical fuel shortage forced them to disembark in Cambodia. The message was shared via the ship’s internal messaging platform, Circle, and expressed regret over the disruption to residents’ plans.

Hours after the apology was posted, it was removed from the platform. Residents who had access to Circle confirmed the memo’s contents and noted its deletion. Villalba’s message acknowledged the emotional toll on passengers and the uncertainty they now face.

The company attributed the crisis to rising fuel costs, which have been exacerbated by the US-Iran conflict. Fuel expenses in parts of Asia have surged from an average of $1,800 per cabin monthly to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000, according to the company’s statement.

Villa Vie Residences suspended operations in Cambodia on October 27, stating that the financial strain from fuel costs has made their current model unsustainable. The company is now evaluating restructuring and recapitalization options.

Villalba, who was known among passengers as 'Resident Wikipedia' for her detailed knowledge of each passenger’s background, expressed personal distress over the situation. She mentioned ongoing efforts to secure investor support and maintain hope for the project’s future.

Residents have spoken out about the impact of the situation, with some expressing frustration over the abrupt halt to their planned global voyage. The company has not provided a timeline for when operations may resume.
