Lawson disqualified from F1 Mexico qualifying
Liam Lawson loses starting spot after technical infringement
The Brief
- Lawson disqualified for failing to reduce MGU-K power at the correct rate
- Racing Bulls' cars qualified 8th and 9th before disqualification
- Disqualification does not affect constructors' championship standings
Liam Lawson has been disqualified from the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix after failing to comply with technical regulations during qualifying. The FIA confirmed the disqualification following an investigation into the incident.
Lawson's car, driven for Racing Bulls, qualified in ninth place during the session. However, a technical infringement led to his disqualification, pushing him to the back of the grid for the race.
The FIA cited a breach of the minimum MGU-K power requirement. Lawson did not immediately reduce power after crossing the finish line, resulting in a steeper rate of reduction than allowed by the regulations.
According to the stewards' report, the driver failed to lift off the throttle immediately after completing his fastest lap in Q2. This caused the rate of reduction of MGU-K deployment to exceed the permitted limits.
The technical regulations specify that electrical power must be reduced gradually, with maximum reductions of 50 or 100kW per second depending on the competition. Lawson's actions violated these limits.
Racing Bulls argued that the infringement did not provide a performance advantage, but the stewards emphasized that non-compliance with the regulations cannot be excused, regardless of the circumstances.
